On Tuesday, a marine biologist who is also a kayak guide had what could have been a frightening experience for anyone else: a great white shark swam directly under his kayak.
Giancarlo Thomae, kayaking in the shallow water near Seacliff State Beach in Aptos on Monterey Bay, snapped photos of the shark at close range. He told the San Francisco Chronicle, “I was just off the cement ship when this 8-foot great white shark swam right under my kayak.” He said the shark did not wait for him to approach it; it headed for his kayak..”

A week before, a great white shark had been spotted near the beach, which prompted Thomae to look from his helicopter, where he saw 15 more sharks a half-mile away. The sharks forced the cancellation of the NorCal Junior Lifeguard competition involving 300 kids.
Thomae told KSBW, “Today I went up with Specialized Helicopters and we witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime-event. We saw over 15 white sharks swimming within a quarter mile radius.”
