On July 4, a single-engine Piper PA18 aircraft crash-landed on Carlsbad State Beach, injuring a 12-year-old boy who was on the beach.
The plane’s 23-year-old pilot was not injured.
The plane apparently lost power while pulling a banner through the sky, and its final seconds in the air were captured in various cell phone videos.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the 12-year-old “suffered a gash on his head after being hit by a wing.” He was ” He was “transported to Rady Children’s Hospital after receiving aid from beach-goers and paramedics.”
The plane flipped over on its back after making solid contact with the beach and skidding to a stop. It was quickly flipped back over by emergency crews, and a “hazardous materials team responded to look for any gasoline or other items that could be dangerous to beach-goers.”
Local ABC News affiliate 10 News reported that the plane was “owned by an El Cajon company named Air Ads Inc.”
