Man Who Murdered Hayward Police Officer Booked into Jail

Mark Anthony Estrada, 21, the man arrested in the Wednesday shooting death of Hayward police Sgt. Scott Lunger after a traffic stop, has been booked into Santa Rita Jail, according to KRON 4. Sgt. J.D. Nelson of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said Estrada was taken into custody at roughly 9 p.m. Thursday and will be arraigned Friday at 2 p.m.

Around 3 a.m. Wednesday, Lunger pulled Estrada over because he was driving erratically. Capt. Mark Koller reported, “As Sgt. Lunger got out of the car and approached the driver side of the vehicle, the driver shot Sgt. Lunger without warning.” Another officer fired at Estrada, who fled and later abandoned his car in Oakland. Estrada was taken to Highland Hospital by relatives for gunshot wounds.

Hayward Police Chief Diane Urban said Estrada was not cooperating with investigators and was “associated with a gang.”

After being shot, Lunger, 48, a 15-year veteran of the police force, was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, California, where he died. He had two daughters.

Koller said simply, “He was an ideal police officer.”
