A Los Angeles Superior Court judge, whose identity was not released, found a hand grenade and brought it to the parking lot of a Torrance courthouse on Tuesday, sparking members of the sheriff’s bomb squad to arrive out of fear that the grenade might still be active.
The judge reportedly found the grenade while cleaning out the personal belongings of a relative who recently passed away, according to the Los Angeles Times. He reportedly decided to bring it to the courthouse hoping that a L.A. County sheriff’s deputy could examine it and take it off of his hands.
The Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad was called to the parking lot around 4 p.m., after a deputy suggested the grenade may be live.
The five-story courthouse, located in the 800 block of Maple Avenue, was reportedly not evacuated and the explosive device was removed from the judge’s car. No one was injured.
