A (not so) little piggy named June was rescued from the roadside when a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer responded to a citizen’s call in Santa Rosa the morning after Thanksgiving and guided the sleeping giant out of danger.
At 600-800 pounds, June had broken free and fallen asleep along Highway 12 near Merced Ave in Santa Rosa, California, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. CHP officer Ken Engers that responded to the Friday morning call and found the oinker.
“He was sleeping in the sun, on the right shoulder, relaxing,” Enger said according to KRON 4 News. Sonoma County Animal services followed, taking over care of the pig.
A CHP-Santa Rosa Facebook post led to the owner and a happy post-Thanksgiving reunion between owner and pig.
The post was published on November 27 at 5:55 p.m., and by 6:51 p.m. commenter Courtney Gabriel had tagged Tammy Benites-Gabriel with “Poor June Bug.” Minutes later, owner Gino Begala was hailed: “OMG Gino Bagala she escaped to go back to her old pen lol.”
Not a minute later Begala declared, “Hey, that’s my pig!!”
Commenter “The Secret Life of Dog Catchers” popped onto the post in reply to Bagala, “Gino, I’m the animal control officer on duty. I love your pig!”
Bagala responded, “Haha she’s a sweetheart. Her name is June. I can’t believe she got out I’m sooo sorry. When will I be able to come get her?”
Santa Rose CHP later posted the glad news that June’s owner had been located: “Update! Looks like the pigs owner saw the post and connected with animal control. SERVICE, the second word we put on our patrol cars!”
Sarcastic commenters joined in as well at the CHP-Santa Rosa’s Facebook post prompting.
“Now who would even be thinking of a sarcastic comment! Although it does look pretty cold, I bet they could use a blanket,” Mark Dobbelmann joked.
Ginger Minnich posted, “He is trying to escape the Christmas dinner table. Go pig!”
“I’m so glad he’s ok. Drove by him around 8. He was the size of a small cow. So majestic! Someone is missing him for certain,” Jennifer Kirk-O’Connor wrote.
