Two college students in military fatigues with gas masks and replica “assault rifles” were arrested Sunday after motorists spotted them on an overpass near the 101 freeway in Agoura Hills and dialed 911.

According to the Associated Press, the freeway was “shut down for at least 10 minutes while deputies from a helicopter ordered the men to surrender.” The college students quickly handed over the fatigues, masks, and fake guns and told law enforcement that they “were filming for a school project.”

The students also handed over cameras allegedly being used to film the project.

Both colleges students were “arrested on suspicion of causing a false emergency.” Captain Patrick Davoren said the students’ “intentions may have been harmless, [yet they] put themselves and the community at risk.”
