Small Plane Crashes onto BART in East Bay, Pilot Dead

One person is dead after a small plane crashed onto a BART track in Hayward, California on Sunday, causing a portion of the public transportation system to be shut down for several hours.

The plane, a twin-engine Piper Pa23, crashed onto a portion of the BART track at 1001 Whipple Road and Railroad Avenue at around 12:05 p.m., according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The pilot of the plane has reportedly died. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor told the paper that pilot was the only person on board the aircraft.

No other injuries were reported.

Service was suspended for approximately two hours between South Hayward Station and Fremont Station as the county coroner and local law enforcement arrived on scene.

The crash happened as Golden State Warriors fans were using the BART system to travel to the Oracle Arena in downtown Oakland for Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

Train service was restored at around 2:20 p.m. on Sunday, according to local CBS affiliate KPIX.
