Stanford Beats Cal, USC Beats UCLA at 2016 Summer Olympics

The ongoing rivalry between the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC) has yielded another victory to USC, with the Trojans earning more Olympic medals from the Rio Summer Games than their Bruin counterparts. But Stanford stands alone on top, with 27 medals, according to one count.

Southern California Public Radio (SCPR) tracked and compiled a list of the medals earned by current and former students from both schools, and found that while UCLA took home 9 medals (six gold, one silver and two bronze), USC took home 19 medals (nine gold, five silver and five bronze).

UCLA’s team reportedly consisted of 29 athletes, while USC had 44. Further, SCPR notes that 11 athletes from UCLA and 28 from USC are competing for other countries, and that “between the two schools, these athletes represent 26 nations, including Venezuela, Jamaica, Canada, Singapore and Hungary.”

Forbes found that only 15 athletes from USC are competing from Team USA, and 16 from UCLA are competing for the same. Combined, they are in the categories of badminton, basketball, tennis, swimming, beach volleyball, indoor volleyball, water polo, soccer, rugby and track and field.

However, beach volleyball player Lauren Fendrick is reportedly being claimed by both schools because she received her undergraduate degree from UCLA (2004) and her law degree from USC (2010).

The intrastate competition also extended to the battle between Northern California rivals UC Berkeley and Stanford, with Stanford winning 27-21.

California also won the most medals of all states in the United States competing in the Summer Games. New York trailed in second place.
