Black Man Shot by El Cajon Police Was Holding ‘Vape Smoking Device,’ Not Gun

El Cajon police say the black man shot and killed after “taking what appeared to be a shooting stance” and pointing an object at an officer was not armed. Rather, he was holding a “vape smoking device” in his hand.

Breitbart News reported that protesters gathered on Tuesday after the man was shot.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the deceased man was Alfred Okwera Olango. His relatives gave “Olango’s age as 30, but in confirming his identity Wednesday, police gave a birth date that put his age at 38.”

On Tuesday afternoon, Olango’s sister called police to report that her brother was acting erratically. El Cajon police chief Jeff Davis said that when officers arrived, Olango “concealed his hand in his pants pockets” and paced around in front of them. He then “rapidly drew an object from his front pants pockets, placed both hands together on it and extended it rapidly toward [one] officer, taking what appeared to be a shooting stance.” At that point, one officer fired a taser but the officer at whom Olango was pointing opened fire. Orlango died shortly thereafter.

San Diego Mayor Bill Wells held a press conference Wednesday afternoon, where he said, “The most important thing to take away from this meeting today is a tragedy occurred in El Cajon yesterday. We lost a life. Nobody wants to see the loss of a life. The family is devastated. The person who lost his life is devastated. Even the police officers involved in the shooting are devastated, and certainly the community is devastated.”

10 News described Olango as “a refugee from Uganda.” Court records show that his family came to the U.S. in 1991 and “federal documents…detail a lengthy criminal past dating back to the 1990s.” In 2001 “he pled guilty to selling cocaine” and in 2005 he “was arrested in Colorado as a felon in possession of a firearm.”
