LAPD Chief Charlie Beck Fractures Pelvis in Motorcycle Accident

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck is recovering after fracturing his pelvis on Sunday during an off-road motorcycle accident in the Tehachapi Mountains.

“I want to thank everyone for their well-wishes as I recuperate from my recent motorcycle mishap,” Beck said in a statement, according to local ABC affiliate in Los Angeles KABC. “As always, I am in constant contact with my LAPD command staff and will be working diligently while I recuperate to continue leading the men and women of the LAPD.”

Beck was reportedly able to ride back to his truck, drive home and subsequently received emergency care at a hospital.

Beck also thanked everyone for their well-wishes and support over Twitter:

According to CBS Los Angeles, Beck said that he will remain in “constant contact” with LAPD command staff and continue to work throughout his recovery. He reiterated this on his Twitter account:

Beck has reportedly been a competitive off-road motorcyclist for the past 40 years.

The statement also notes: “Doctors said Beck is expected to have a full, speedy recovery and return to the office within the next week, police said. He will receive follow-up care that may include surgery on Monday.”
