Climate change activist and major Democrat donor Tom Steyer has big plans to ramp up his opposition to President Donald J. Trump, rolling out a new campaign through his organization, NextGen Climate.
Steyer recently joined protesters outside the San Francisco International Airport, holding a sign that read “not on my watch” as protesters halted and stalled travelers and airport operations in opposition to President Trump’s executive order restricting travel from seven terror–prone countries.
The former hedge fund manager has brandished the climate change torch with many tens of millions in campaign spending on Hillary Clinton and other Democrats, but now Steyer is refocusing his aim on hindering Trump, according to the Los Angeles Times. He indicated in an interview that he sees the issues that need addressing as “broader” than climate change alone. Steyer assailed Trump’s comments on voting as attacking “fundamental American rights.”
“We’ve never faced a situation like this,” Steyer said in a video he posted to Facebook on Tuesday. “Donald Trump has launched an all-out assault on the American way of life,” he claimed. “That’s why we need to stand up for our values.”
“I promise to do everything in my power to stand up to Trump,” Steyer declares in the video.
Steyer implores viewers to help by providing ideas on the website for NextGen Climate or on Facebook and Twitter.
In October 2016 Steyer claimed that his NextGen Climate Action Committee super PAC had registered over one million voters, over 700,000 of whom were new California voters. Last September, he told MSNBC viewers that his organization was putting $20 million toward campaigning for Clinton in eight swing states. The push could not, however, put Clinton over the finish line, as she lost her bid for President to Trump in November.
Steyer has been actively subverting Trump’s administration already, with ads assailing Trump’s choice for Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson (who was confirmed Wednesday). He has made known he intends to push a California-inflected view of the country.
