Four Dead in Shooting at UPS Facility in San Francisco

A mass shooting took place at a UPS facility in San Francisco — at the very moment many Californians learned about the shooting attack on Congressional Republicans at an early morning baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

According to online news outlet SF Gate, “At least two people were shot dead and several people were injured when a man believed to be an employee let loose a barrage of gunfire Wednesday morning at the UPS building in the Potrero Hill area of San Francisco, prompting a massive police response and a shelter-in-place warning for the surrounding area, officials and witnesses [reportedly] said.”

The Los Angeles Times reports that the death toll has reached four.

One witness, according to the SF Gate story, said that “at least three people had been shot. He said the shooter had a handgun and that he recognized him as a UPS employee.”

Other witnesses, including a man who lives within a block of the facility, recounted hearing “four shots, followed a short time later by four more shots.”

Live streaming video on that news site showed employees being escorted to safety, and what appeared to be “two bodies covered by yellow tarps.”

A local NBC Affiliate (9News) in San Francisco reported that “the gunman opened fire on the third floor of the building. KCBS Radio reported that the shooter, a male believed to be a UPS driver, was taken into custody and was being transported to the hospital.”

Multiple news outlets are reporting that the incident is being characterized as “workplace violence.”

The UPS processing facility where the shooting occurred is located about two miles south of downtown. It is a familiar site for UPS drivers in and out of San Francisco, and clearly visible along the freeway (State Hwy 101).

Other witnesses, including a man who lives within a block of the facility, recounted hearing “four shots, followed a short time later by four more shots.”

NBC 9 News reported that “[i]n a statement, UPS said that local law enforcement had control of the facility and that the company was cooperating with the investigation. UPS could not give any information on the alleged attacker.”
