Police found a robbery suspect lying in the front yard of a Hesperia, California, residence after the homeowner, a Vietnam veteran, shot him.

The incident occurred around 10:30 pm Thursday night and one witness indicated the “gunshot sounded like an explosion.”

ABC 7 reports that 36-year-old Michael Goode allegedly “tried to gain entry through the front window of the house.” Then the shot rang out, leaving Goode in the front yard asking onlookers for help.

First responders arrived and transported Goode to the hospital in critical condition.

Neighbor Jesus Mejia indicated the homeowner was a Vietnam veteran. Mejia spoke about the veteran’s defense of his home, saying, “As long as you protect your family and yourself, I don’t see anything wrong with it.”

Goode had been released from jail four days before being shot. He had been serving time for a parole violation. Law enforcement anticipates Goode will return to jail “if he survives.”
