Stanford Band, Banned: No Road Trips Next Season

On Friday, Stanford University banned the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band (LSJUMB) from performing at any athletic events held away from the university for one year because of the band’s recent history of the use of alcohol and controlled substances as well as hazing.

Man-Made: NYT Blames Jerry Brown’s Dad for CA Drought

CORONADO — When Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina called California’s drought “man-made” earlier this year, blaming mismanagement by the state’s liberal politicians, Democrats mocked her. The Washington Post’s fact-checker even gave her two “Pinocchios” for the claim. However, on Sunday the New York Times appeared to agree that the drought is man-made, at least in its impacts–and blamed former Gov. Pat Brown, father of current Gov. Jerry Brown.

Entire 2016 Class of USC Art and Design School Drops Out

On Friday, all seven members of the graduate class of 2016 at USC’s Roski School of Art and Design withdrew from the program to protest changes the administration made in the faculty, curriculum and funding. The students were also upset because they had been guaranteed teaching assistant positions, but halfway through the 2014-15 school year they were told to submit applications with writing samples and references, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Former NBA basketball player and current Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is being accused of sexual harassment by a city employee who had previously worked as an aide in the Sacramento city manager’s office. The alleged harassment reportedly took place over the course of seven months.

Bay Area’s Lower Regulation Helps It Beat L.A.

The Center for Jobs & the Economy has published a study entitled, “Economic Tale of Two Regions: Los Angeles County vs. Bay Area.” Their research, which compiles data to track jobs created in the past 24 years, reveals that the two regions have been at opposite ends of the wage spectrum. The Bay Area experienced high-wage growth that lifted the middle-class, while Los Angeles slumped toward a two-tier economy as higher-wage jobs shriveled and were somewhat replaced by lower-wage jobs.

Chickens Saved From Alleged Cockfighting Ring Could Be Euthanized

Close to 200 chickens, hens and roosters that were allegedly being raised and trained for the “barbaric sport of cockfighting” were rescued by San Diego County Animal Services recently, near the U.S.-Mexico border. But they are unlikely to escape the clutches of death: the birds will likely be euthanized unless their owners step forward.
