Los Angeles: More Gun Control, More Violent Crime in 2014

In 2014, Los Angeles had more gun control–notably a ban on “high capacity” magazines, a trigger lock requirement, and numerous other new gun controls passed the previous year. Yet they also saw violent crime rise “14.3 percent,” driven by “aggravated assaults”–assaults in which a weapon was used during the attack.

Cuba Big Export Potential for California Farmers

Cuba should be a bountiful island with an excellent growing season. But the workers’ paradise has to import $2 billion in food each year to prevent the workers from starving. American farmers have been able to get a small piece of the market since food sales were allowed as an exemption to the 1962 trade embargo in 2000. But with Obama Administration moving to normalize relationships, California, as America’s top food producing state, looks forward to serving a market of 11 million new consumers.

CA’s Major Cities Hold Rallies in Solidarity with France

On Sunday, rallies held in California’s major cities coincided with the massive rally in France to protest against the terrorist killings in Paris last past week. In Los Angeles, hundreds of people stood in the rain outside City Hall. Channel 10 in San Diego reported that roughly 130 people marched through Balboa Park despite the rain. In San Francisco, hundreds of demonstrators stood in front of San Francisco City Hall on Sunday afternoon, many adorned with the “Je Suis Charlie” mantra.

Why Obama Watched Football Instead of Going to Paris

After sitting out the “#HandsUpDontShoot” and “#BlackLivesMatter” demonstrations, Obama and Holder were not going to be caught on camera attending a “#JeSuisCharlie” rally in Paris, no matter how many other world leaders were going to be there in solidarity with the French people, with the Jewish people, or with freedom of expression in general.

Republicans Can Win Boxer’s Senate Seat

Why not call a meeting of both GOP establishment and conservative leaders in California, and get them to agree to a strategy as a party? The basic strategy is very simple. Let the people pick the candidate. Then everyone–activists and donors alike–agree to back the primary winner through the general election. Instead of squandering tens of millions in the primary, perhaps the money could be pledged to support the Republican victor, regardless of whether he or she is a conservative or a liberal Republican.

A GOP Replacement For Boxer: California Dreamin’

When we start to see Republicans putting their hands up to run who we think couldn’t win if the state were competitive, you needed a reminder: the bar is a lot lower. Perhaps we are looking for someone who will stand tall for GOP principles? Someone that can make the runoff so the California GOP doesn’t suffer the humiliation of having no nominee at all? Or making sure that our nominee isn’t some “Birther” type?
