One of the perks of being a wildlife researcher is that you get to name new species as they are discovered. For Dr. Stephanie Bush, a researcher at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), that means naming a previously unclassified, cute-as-a-button deep-sea octopus Opistoteuthis adorabilis.

Obama Expected to Slow Traffic Again With Friday Bay Area Visit

President Barack Obama will head to San Francisco on Friday, en route from his 22nd visit to Southern California, to speak to the U.S. Conference of Mayors and attend several Democratic fundraisers. However, the Secret Service’s reluctance to share specifics as to what time and precise areas he will be in, for reasons of security, is likely to cause tremendous gridlock and painful traffic.

California AME Churches Express Grief–and Add Security

Members of black churches in California responding to the horrific attack on Emanuel AME Church in South Carolina Wednesday are expressing their grief, and noting that the attack recalled prior eras when racism was more widely accepted. Meanwhile, the LAPD upped its patrol around black churches, the Los Angeles Times reports.

He saw a black man walking with his family and decided that was good enough. He shot him–and Ricky Byrdsong, former Northwestern University basketball coach, died. The killer led an interstate manhunt, during which he killed a Korean man and attacked a church before shooting himself.

Amnesty Opponents Say State Senator Barred Them from Public Meeting
