California election officials Wednesday released plans for new legislation with the stated aim of “provid[ing] greater flexibility and convenience” for voters, including voting by mail, in the hope that the changes will boost voter turnout.

U.S. House Votes to Cut Some High-Speed Rail Spending

U.S. Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA), chairman of the House rail subcommittee, has proposed an amendment that could cripple plans for the construction of California’s high-speed rail project. Denham’s amendment would eliminate a 2012 agreement between California and the Obama administration that permitted the state to obtain federal grant money without matching those funds with money from state coffers.

In the midst of a heated lawsuit alleging Harvard holds Asian students to a much higher standard during its admissions process, some college admissions counselors in California and elsewhere are coaching Asian American students to appear “less Asian” in an attempt to help them be accepted into the nation’s most elite schools.

Medicare Hits 50 Years Old and Is Broke as a Joke

On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law and enrolled former President Harry Truman as its first beneficiary. But today, federal unfunded liabilities are catastrophic for future taxpayers and economic growth. The US Debt Clock lists federal unfunded liabilities at $97 trillion. That equals about $818 thousand per taxpayer; about three times average U.S. net worth; and 131 percent of world GDP.

Gay Marriage Tourism: China’s LGBT Population Exchanges Vows in California

Gay marriage is illegal in China, but this past Tuesday in West Hollywood, seven gay and lesbian Chinese couples–winners of an all-expenses-paid trip to the United States and an American dream wedding–were able to exchange vows. Although their marriages are legal in the United States, they won’t be recognized in their home country.

Obama Expands Refuge to Stop Oil Drilling–Where No Oil Exists

To buy peace with climate change activists after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that oil fracking does not poison water, President Obama has signed an executive order tripling the size of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, just north of San Francisco. The order bans oil drilling in the area Obama renamed the “Greater” Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. The move is merely symbolic, since there are no oil reserves in the area.

SF Supervisors Agree to Slap Warning Labels on Soda

On Tuesday, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously passed three pieces of legislation attacking the sugar in soda drinks. One proposal from Supervisor Scott Wiener requires billboards, buses, transit shelters, posters and sports stadiums to sport warning labels on soda advertising. Another proposal from Supervisor Malia Cohen bars any advertising for soda on city property. A third proposal from Supervisor Eric Mar prevents the city from spending any money on soda.

Tesla Receives 30% of Cal Tax Credits for Promising 4500 Jobs

The Silicon Valley Business Journal is reporting that “Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors is on track to win $15 million in new tax breaks as part of the final round of this year’s California Competes tax credit.” According to Governor Brown’s GO-Biz website, tax credits are awarded to businesses that come or stay and grow in California. With much of his $13.3 billion net worth coming from tax subsidies, Musk may celebrate his latest gift of “government cheese” from Reno, where Tesla’s highly-subsidized $5 billion giga-factory is being built.

San Francisco prides itself on its image as a bastion of diversity and progressive politics. But according to a new study by the San Francisco Foundation, the city’s policies are rapidly ejecting blacks, Latinos and Asians to become a “lily white” island in a heavily diverse region over the next 25 years.
