TEL AVIV – Several Facebook memes gaining momentum in Israel compare the Paris attacks to 9/11 and ongoing assaults on Israel by Palestinian terrorists.
One image that went viral over the weekend depicts the US, French, and Israeli flags side by side. Under the US and French flags are the dates 9/11 and 11/13 respectively. Under the Israeli flag, however, the caption reads “24/7.”
Israelis active on social media are wondering if the Paris attacks will make the world pay more attention to almost daily terrorist attacks against Israel, most recently a wave of indiscriminate stabbings – including of children and the elderly – at the hands of Palestinians as young as 11.
These memes were reflected by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called on the world to condemn terrorism against Israelis the same way it condemns terrorism elsewhere in the world. “In Israel, as in France, terrorism is terrorism, and standing behind it is radical Islam and its desire to destroy its victims,” Netanyahu said during a cabinet meeting. “The time has come for the world to wake up and unite in order to defeat terrorism.”
In response, pro-Palestinian Islamic groups released a similar meme in which the French flag is followed by the Palestinian flag, which is also captioned “24/7” with the hashtag #AllLifeMatters.
A Facebook community page called Islamic Voice of Turkey shared the image and wrote underneath, “Terrorism is terrorism. Especially rabid dog Israel.”
