TEL AVIV – A Lebanese daily printed an image of Gal Gadot on its front page with the caption “the Israeli Mossad officer Collette Vianfi,” a woman accused of being a spy for Israel who allegedly recruited Lebanese actor and playwright Ziad Itani.
The Beirut-based paper Al Liwaa later apologized for the mistake, saying on Monday it was an “unintended technical error.”
It further claimed the photograph had been making the rounds on social media in connection to the Itani case, with thousands of shares claiming that Gadot was in fact Mossad agent Vianfi. Vianfi, the report said, was supposed to visit Itani in the Lebanese capital this week but the actor ended up being arrested on Friday and charged with “collaborating” with Israel as well as selling intel on political figures.
According to the country’s State Security Directorate General, Itani was detained “after several months of monitoring, follow-up and investigations within and outside” Lebanon.
The photo used by Al Liwaa was taken from Gadot’s 2011 role in “Fast Five,” part of the “Fast and the Furious” franchise.
Over the summer, the movie “Wonder Woman” was banned in Lebanon due to the Israeli actress’ starring role.
