The latest plan by Iran to expand its nuclear enrichment capacity was aimed squarely at producing nuclear weapons to be used against Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned.

Mr. Netanyahu is currently visiting European leaders to discuss Iran’s regional involvement and nuclear program, both seen by the Jewish state as grave threats to its future security.

Speaking on the day he met French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Mr. Netanyahu left no doubts about what he saw as the grave existential threat posed by a nuclear Iran.

“Two days ago, Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, stated his intention to destroy the State of Israel,” Netanyahu said in a video posted on social media.

“Yesterday he explained how he would do it — by unlimited enrichment of uranium to create an arsenal of nuclear bombs. We’re not surprised. We won’t let Iran obtain nuclear weapons.”

Mr. Netanyahu issued his warning within hours of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordering his Atomic Energy Organization to prepare for weapons-grade uranium enrichment, bringing pressure against European powers desperate to keep the Iran nuclear deal alive after the U.S.withdrew last month.

“The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran is duty-bound to prepare the ground for achieving 190 thousand SWUs,” Khamenei said, insisting this production level would fall within the upper limit of what the nuclear deal (formally known as the JCPOA) allows.

Khamenei also directly attacked Israel late on Sunday, labelling it a “malignant cancerous tumour” in a Tweet. It was the latest in a long list of bellicose insults sent by the leader of the Islamic republic aganst the Jewish state.

Mr. Netanyahu is currently in Europe attempting to convince its leaders to follow the U.S. lead and withdraw from the JCPOA. On Monday he met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who defended the nuclear deal despite its flaws.

Merkel did agree with Netanyahu that the IAEA should examine Iran’s nuclear program more closely.
