Desertion by Islamic State Fighters Is Up, Raising Fears of Attacks in the West

Army Col. Steve Warren, spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS), said Sunday that jihadists appear to be deserting the group in growing numbers, leaving ISIS strongholds badly secured but prompting new concerns that defecting jihadists will return home battle-hardened and ready to execute “lone wolf” attacks.

Boko Haram Raze Village in Niger, Abduct Unknown Number of Teen Girls from Nigeria

In what is appearing to have been an especially active Sunday for the terrorists of Islamic State-affiliated Boko Haram, two separate groups of jihadis razed as many as 50 homes in Niger while a separate gang stormed a Borno state village, kidnapping dozens of teen girls. Most of the more than 200 girls abducted from Chibok, Borno in April 2012 remain captive.

Although two terrorist massacres happened at the same time in Paris, France and Baga, Nigeria this past January, the responses were different. The world rallied for the three days following the extremist Islamist incidents in France that left 17 dead and dallied on the four days of violence that wiped out 2,000 souls in Baga.

Former New York Police Commissioner Howard Safir warned Sunday on New York City’s AM 970 “Cats Roundtable” that the city is still susceptible to terror attacks like the ones earlier this month in Paris that left 130 dead and around 350 more injured.
