Man Allegedly Causes Crash with Kentucky State Trooper Then Shoots, Killing the Officer

A suspect who allegedly killed a Kentucky State Police trooper was himself killed after he refused to put down his weapon. On the night of September 13 Kentucky State Trooper Joseph Cameron Ponder was in a high speed case when the suspect–25-year-old Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks–is alleged to have purposely slammed on his brakes. This caused Ponder’s cruiser to crash into Johnson-Shanks’ vehicle, after which Johnson-Shanks opened fire, hitting the trooper with multiple shots.

Following a shocking sentencing hearing, a Houston woman was sentenced to 60 years in prison for killing Deputy Sheriff Jesse Valdez, III, in 2014 while driving under the influence of drugs. The vehicle she was driving crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the police car head on.

Twenty-eight Texans were honored on the House floor of the Texas Capitol today as Governor Greg Abbott presented the Star of Texas Awards. The awards are presented to police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel who have shown extraordinary courage and have been killed or seriously injured while serving in the line of duty. September 11th is Texas First Responder’s Day.
