War.

War.

The acting Ukrainian President has declared that his country is at war with the Russian Federation following this weekend’s latest clashes across the eastern part of Ukraine.

The Times reports that Oleksandr Turchynov, acting President of Ukraine, stated in a televised address that Ukraine was at war with Russia, saying: “The blood of Ukrainian heroes has been shed in a war that the Russian Federation is waging against Ukraine… The aggressor has not stopped and is continuing to sow disorder in the east of the country.”

Mr Turchynov has sent in Ukrainian armed forces following uprisings by Russian-friendly forces in the east of Ukraine. The armed ‘protestors’ stormed government buildings over the weekend, occupying them in the name of the Russian state, and advocating a reunification with Putin’s Russia.

The British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that a “further dangerous escalation of an already dangerous situation” between the two countries was occurring.

The Times reports:

“The Ukrainian government and the US accused Moscow of plotting the unrest, which left pro-Russian forces in control of government buildings in at least seven eastern cities last night. Bands of well-coordinated men in full matching unmarked camouflage and bristling with weaponry led most of the raids in an echo of tactics that led ultimately to Russia annexing Crimea, in southern Ukraine, last month.

Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov held a televised press conference on Sunday to address the violent takeovers of cities in east Ukraine. He announced that Kyiv will “launch a large-scale anti-terrorist operation involving the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”
