ACLU Wants $300,000 From Sheriff Arpaio, in ‘Personal Funds’

Arpaio

The American Civil Liberties Union wants Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio to pay $300,000 in “personal funds” as a penalty for violating a judge’s contempt ruling.

The Arpaio money would be “compensation to victims of his contempt [of court]” ruling, claims the ACLU.

Breitbart News previously reported that Arpaio was found in contempt of court on May 13 in a racial profiling case. At that time, AZ Central reported that the judge in the case–Judge Murray Snow–would meet with attorneys on May 31 to discuss penalty options for the contempt ruling and would also issue an order as to “whether Arpaio [will] refer the case for a criminal contempt trial.”

In the run-up to the penalty options, AZ Family reports that the ACLU wants Arpaio to be forced to pay “$300,000 … of his personal funds” to those who were the alleged targets of racial profiling. They also want “Arpaio and his chief deputy, Jerry Sheridan, to come up with another $100,000 to be donated to a civil rights organization working with the Hispanic community.”

In addition to the money, the ACLU is asking Judge Snow to launch a “criminal investigation.” They want Arpaio’s contempt ruling expanded to “criminal contempt.”
