Authorities in Germany have released new information regarding a dangerous asylum seeker who fled a psychiatric hospital in October, saying he committed more than 50 crimes over a period of only 14 months and is still on the loose.

27-year-old Moroccan asylum seeker Hicham B. is said to have attempted to claim asylum in several different countries including  Finland, France, and Denmark under false identities. When his lies were discovered he would simply move to another country and repeat the process, German public broadcaster Südwestrundfunk reports.

Eventually, after committing over 50 crimes including sexual assaults, violence, and even attacking police officers, and threatening other asylum seekers with a knife, Hicham B. was arrested and placed in a detention centre in Ingelheim.

He did not stay there long as he was transferred to a psychiatric hospital after attempting to set fires in his prison cell. According to other inmates, he told them that he would rather kill himself than leave Germany, and that he would also kill others if forced to leave the country.

Once in the psychiatric hospital, the 27-year-old managed to escape the facility during a football match organised for the inmates, and due to the security guards not being allowed to detain escapees he was able to get away before police arrived. He remains at large.

A spokeswoman from the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Integration also claimed that the failed asylum seeker had escaped from two other psychiatric care facilities in the past. The regional government has now vowed to deploy police officers to monitor particularly dangerous patients at the care facilities in response to his escape.

Germany has had severe difficulties in deporting failed asylum seekers, even those who commit crimes. A recent report showed that German pilots often refuse to take failed asylum seekers back to their countries of origin.

Several high-profile criminal cases, including last year’s Berlin Christmas market terror attack, have also been suspected of being carried out by failed asylum seekers, including the murder of a Romanian prostitute, the murder of a two-year-old girl in Hamburg, and the murder of a five-year-old boy in Bavaria.
