Immediate Cause of Polish Government Plane Crash Revealed (Part 1)

[The following was provided to Big Peace by an anonymous source in Poland.]

Crash of government’s plane (Polish president does not have one and it is very important for defining who takes responsibility for a preparation of the president’s flight) with president and his delegation on the board on the way to Katyn on April 10th caught everybody by surprise. Almost. There was at least one person, who knew the reason of that crash a few minutes after it took place. It was Radek Sikorski, Polish minister of Foreign Affairs, who while informing president’s brother, chief of the opposition party Law and Justice Jaroslaw Kaczynski about the tragedy, did not hesitate to blame a pilot. (A day later Sikorski legitimized that unproved claim in his interview with CNN because until that time only Russian’s media were using that propaganda theme without any hesitation).

This fact and many others are being revealed after the death of Polish president. His brother Jaroslaw Kaczynski told in July in an interview with Polish weekly “Gazeta Polska” details about Mr. Sikorski’s phone call. It looked like from the beginning a minister and his colleagues in Polish government were swallowing a vicious Russian propaganda without even a small reflection. Ignoring obvious fact of a maskirovka (a concealment) they demonstrated belief in Kremlin’s good intentions. And that this government was paying more attention to preserve good relations with Russia than deal responsibly with an unprecedented event. Perhaps one has to know that present government has been political rival to the conservative president Lech Kaczynski’s camp.

One could characterize ruling party Civic Platform as American Democrats. They pretended to be free market and modern party during a campaign but a year of their governance proved that neither promised flat tax will be implemented nor taxes will be lowered. But perhaps foreign policy towards Russia mirrors president Barack Obama’s “reset ” course. It is not only very naïve approach but also suicidal for Poland. Polish’s history teaches that only when Russia was weakened or isolated Poland could be independent. It is also a condition sine qua non of the existence of Russia’s immediate neighbors as fully sovereign states. One can argue that Russia has more common with Siberian nations than with European. Whenever it wanted to proved its greatness it destroyed and conquered higher culturally and institutionally developed states. As historian Richard Pipes emphasizes that Russia never developed democratic institutions. After 1990’s dissolution of Soviet Union, new state Russian Federation became famous by lack of state’s institution, limited freedom and democracy. In 2000 Russia was taken under total control by those who once were behind the most cruel crimes against humanity, comrades from GRU and KGB.

Polish liberals as their American colleagues have their own idée fixe, which fully benefits Russia. One of those who saw that danger was president Kaczynski. That is why he was viciously attacked by politician and Polish mainstream media until last moments of his life. Kaczynski had to be hated figure and outrageous personality. Rival politicians, servile reporters and mindless intelligentsia mocked not only his ideas but most of all his personality. Since he was criticized because he was short, commentators elaborated for instance on his hand’s gesture during his television appearance, some politicians implied that he was drunk man to destroy his credibility. All of those attacks served one goal – to undermine his foreign policy, which was totally different from the course being realized by minister Sikorski. Instead of bows to Putin and inviting Kremlin’s regime representatives to Poland, he wanted to build an independence from Russian’s natural gas and intimidation. He wanted Central European nations’ s bloc to not be crushed by Russian and Germans like in September 1939. That bloc was supposed to cooperate as a partner with the rest of Europe and be an ally of United States. Such was his political vision for this part of Europe. That is why president Kaczynski without any hesitation not only showed support to Georgia but committed all of immediate Russia’s neighbors presidents to Tbilisi after Moscow attacked Tbillisi. No wonder why Russian’s propaganda machine created legend after that flight that President forced a pilot to land. One can however think why it was possible that even conservative media around the world reported that lie?

Perhaps that question leads to another – why until now conservative media did not show interest in “an investigation of the worst NATO tragedy since WWII?” If Air Force One should crash would anybody report on its investigation? Is the article 5 of NATO’s Declaration still valid? Or is it as some foreign policy experts once suggested a matter for debates? Why Western media lost interest in that matter? Why American reporters think that it is a matter unrelated to the life of their countrymen? (See Part 2 tomorrow.)
