French Interior Minister Says Muslims 'Pose Problems,' Muslims Hand Out Green 5-Point Stars

French Interior Minister Claude Gueant made comments in Nantes that has set off a storm in France. It was during a debate about the role of Islam in France that Gueant declared that the growing population of Muslims in France “poses problems.” He went on:

“The question worries our citizens: there are many who think the rules of secularism are being stretched…. In 1905 [the year the separation of church and state was brought into law] there were few Muslims in France, today there are between five to 10 million. This growth of believers and certain types of practices pose problems. It is clear that prayers in the street shock a certain number of people and the leaders of major religions know that this type of practice affects them negatively,” he said.

Critics have started handing out green five point stars, saying that Muslims are being targeted like Jews were in 1930s Germany. Gueant’s precedessor was successfully sued for racism for comments that were far milder.
