Ron Paul On Iran: Let Israel Deal With It

In December 2011, I had a post on Big Peace that echoed Dick Morris’ claim that Paul is to the left of Obama when it comes to using the military, confronting our enemies abroad, and supporting our key allies (particularly Israel). To bolster my contention I highlighted Paul’s claims that he wouldn’t have authorized Seal Team Six to take out Osama bin Laden and his contention that he wouldn’t have used U.S. troops to save the Jews from Hitler during World War II. (On killing Bin Laden he said, “It absolutely was not necessary” and of saving the Jews from Hitler’s ovens he said, “I wouldn’t risk American lives to do that.”)

And while Paul has also been outspoken on his opposition to the use of force to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, he took that portion of his foreign policy to new heights of craziness on Monday when he came out against sanctions on Iran as well.  So what does he think should be done to keep Iran from finally developing nuclear weapons? According to Paul, the answer to that question is easy: “Let Israel deal with it.”

Paul added: “This idea that we have to automatically go to war and start a war against Iran, it’s crazy.”

But there’s a serious problem with Paul’s suggestion–and the problem is that if Israel attacks Iran, as many predict they will, there could be ramifications of such magnitude that Israel will need her allies to come along side her in the weeks and months that follow. In other words, all the Middle Eastern nations that have spent years talking about destroying Israel may view an Israeli attack on Iran as justification for finally launching their own attacks against Israel.

Then what will Paul do? And how can we expect the man who wouldn’t have taken out Bin Laden or saved the Jews from Hitler to suddenly stand up to opportunists in the Middle East who are determined to wipe Israel off the map?

In all honesty, there’s more than an outside chance that Obama is a better friend to Israel than Ron Paul would be.
