The State Department states that the U.S. is giving a stern talking-to to the Iraqi government after the Iraqis reportedly allowed Iran to use its airspace to ship weapons to Syria, The Washington Times reports. “We are concerned about the overflight of Iraq by Iranian cargo flights headed to Syria,” said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki denied that the Iraqis were allowing Iran to use their airspace. Says the Times:
A U.S. official told The Times that Iraq’s government has ignored credible intelligence that the planes are transporting up to 30 tons of weapons and has said the Iranian cargo flights were transporting only humanitarian aid.
What’s more, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told Congress last week that the Iraqi government has asked Iran to stop flying cargo planes through its airspace.
The planes have been radioing in to Iraqi towers, telling them that they’re carrying “flowers” and “agricultural equipment.”
President Obama has made withdrawal from Iraq a centerpiece of his re-election campaign; when Gov. Rick Perry of Texas stated that he would reinsert troops into Iraq during one presidential debate, he was mocked repeatedly by the pundit class. But there is no question that Iraq is devolving back into chaos – and what’s worse, after spending our blood and treasure there for almost a decade, we are handing over the country to the Iranians, who now have safe haven to play their Islamist trade.
