N.Korea raises spectre of war to influence S.Korea elections

North Korea has raised the spectre of war in a bid to influence Wednesday’s parliamentary election in the South, urging South Koreans to vote out their “pro-war conservative regime”.

The two state agencies responsible for exchanges with the South accused Seoul late Monday of pursuing confrontation and bringing the Korean peninsula to the brink of war under the current conservative government.

The elections for the 300-seat parliament are seen as too close to call, with the ruling New Frontier Party and the major opposition centre-left Democratic United Party tipped to grab some 130-135 seats each.

The North has been stepping up calls to South Koreans to vote against the conservative bloc, which scrapped the “sunshine” aid and engagement policy of the centre-left predecessor administration.

But its attempts to influence the election are seen as having little effect, despite a rocket launch scheduled for April 12-16, which Seoul terms a grave provocation.

North Korea is barely an issue in campaigning, Professor Kang Won-Taek of Seoul National University told AFP last month.
