Netanyahu Calls for Early Elections over National Security Concerns

Citing security and economic stability, Prime Minister Netanyahu is calling for Israeli elections to be held as soon as possible.

With Iran beating war drums and Hezbollah training to join the Islamic Republic in attacks against Israel, Netanyahu believes it’s not wise for Israel to spend the usual one year in a campaign and election cycle. He believes this distracts from the greater points of national security and will be a drag on Israel’s economy.

Instead, Netanyahu is calling for elections to be held as early as possible, and that date is January 15, 2013.

According to Netanyahu: “in light of the two great upheavals around us, the security and the economic, my obligation as prime minister is to put national interest above everything and therefore, I have decided that the good of the State of Israel requires going to elections now, as soon as possible.”

The Israeli PM says the focus right now should be on “responsible economic and security policies,” and nothing ought to distract from that.
