Chinese fisherman killed while fishing in South Korean waters

South Korea expressed regret Friday over the death of a Chinesefisherman who was with a group of 30 Chinese vessels fishing in SouthKorean waters. The Chinese fishermen used knives and clubs on SouthKorean Coast Guard officers attempting to board the fishing vessels. The South Koreans responded by firing rubber bullets, and one of theChinese fishermen was killed. China is protesting the incident. Sofar this year, the South Korean coast guard has seized 130 Chinesefishing boats for poaching. Chinese fishermen consider the riskacceptable because the fish stocks off the South Korean coast are muchricher (in quantity and quality) than off China (where overfishing hasdone a lot of damage).
