Families and victims of the Nov 5, 2009 Ft. Hood shooting have filed a wrongful death suit against the U.S. government, the accused shooter Maj. Nidal Hasan, and the estate of Anwar al-Awlaki.
Anwar al-Awlaki is a U.S.-born Islamist cleric linked to Al-Qaeda’s Yemen-based affiliate. He was also influential in the life of Hasan.
The 148 plaintiffs are suing because the Obama administration has refused to label the horrific shooting an act of terrorism.
The wording within the suit itself points the finger at Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and other Obama officials, whom the victims and families of victims claim “disregarded the safety of soldiers and civilians at Ft. Hood.” It also takes issue with the fact that Hasan was allowed to be in a place to shoot in the first place, even though his superiors knew he was a “radical extremist.”
Those involved in the suit say the government has gone out its way to make their lives miserable, and the Army, as well, has refused to label the shooting a terrorist attack.
As I wrote on Oct 21, because the shooting hasn’t been labeled a terrorist attack, the victims are being denied the benefits commensurate with wounds received in service to country.
