Israel Fires into Syrian Territory

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) fired a missile at a Syrian post early this morning in response to a Syrian 120mm mortar shell landing in the eastern Golan Heights. No injuries were reported on the Israeli side, but no information is publicly available regarding injuries or damage in Syria.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit told Ynet News in an issued statement that “IDFforces fired warning shots and relayed a message to the Syrian forcesvia the United Nations that warns against additional fire. Additionalfire will prompt a quick response.”

Eight such events have transpired in the past two months, but this is the first time Israel has responded with military action of any sort. Israel has filed complaints with the UN in each instance of Syrian attacks on Israeli-controlled soil, in addition to notifying the UN of several Syrian military incursions into the demilitarized buffer zone between the two nations.
