New Addition to Israel's Defense

A new addition to Israel’s defense is set to be tested very soon. The David’s Sling’s Stunner interceptor missile, a missile defense system currently under development by Rafael in Israel and Raytheon in the US, is supposed to be operational by 2014.

The Stunner would target Iranian missiles such as the M600, the Zelzal, Fajr and Fateh 110 that are now found in Lebanon with Hezbollah in addition to other missiles with a range between 70 and 300 kilometers. Israel Defense Force sources estimate that there are roughly 200,000 rockets and missiles that have targeted Israel from Iran, Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas.

The Stunner interceptor is fitted into a launcher holding 16 missiles. It is used in conjunction with an advanced phased-array radar that is made by Israel Aerospace Industries. David’s Sling will be a part of the many-faceted Israeli defense system to guard against medium-range threats; Iron Dome protects against short-range missiles and rockets, while Arrow and arrow 3 guard against long-range missiles and ICBMs.
