Feinstein: Transfer of Gitmo Detainees to U.S. 'Viable Option'

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has commissioned a report showing that the transfer of Guantanamo Bay inmates to U.S. prisons is a “viable option.”

According to reports uncovered on Wednesday, Feinstein has been looking for prisons which are suitable to hold all or some of the nearly 170 detainees still being held in Cuba.

Feinstein contends that the time to close Gitmo is now. She says, “if the political will exists, we could finally close Guantanamo without imperiling our national security.” 

However, Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) couldn’t agree less. Wolf recounts the Obama administration’s purchase of Thomson Prison in Illinois–a purchase he described as a “first step in transferring the world’s most dangerous terrorists from Guantanamo to the U.S.”

I wrote on the administration’s procurement of Thomson Prison in early October. At that time, both Rep. Wolf and Rep. Peter King (R-NY) feared the Democrats would revive transferring Gitmo inmates as soon as it was politically feasible. 

Apparently, Feinstein believes it is feasible now.
