Federal Agents: Navy Veteran Tried to Pass Submarine Secrets to Russia

A former technician in the U.S. Navy was arrested on December 6th for allegedly trying to provide Russian agents with information that would help them track U.S. submarines.

As it turns out, the “Russian agents” were actually part of a federal sting in which Robert Patrick Hoffman II passed a secret document revealing “methods to track U.S. submarines, including the technology and procedures required [to do so],” according to law enforcement.

Hoffman served 20 years in the Navy, retiring in November 2011 as a petty officer.

He passed the document on October 21st, after which investigators claimed he acted “with intent… that such information would be used to the injury of the United States and to the advantage of a foreign nation.”

If convicted of the charges, Hoffman could face life in prison.
