Lieberman: U.S.-Mexico Border More Secure Against Terrorist Infiltration

Senate Homeland Security Committee Chair Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) says U.S.-Mexico border security is tighter than ever in regards to stopping terrorists from entering the country. Lieberman claims that this security has been implemented in a way that does not reduce the freedom of Americans.

Lieberman specifically referenced measures that have been taken to keep out “Hezbollah terrorists and their supporters.” 

He explained that the focus on Hezbollah was due to a 2008 incident where a Mexican national smuggled Hezbollah terrorists into the U.S. from Mexico. He knows that’s not the only time members of Hezbollah have entered or tried to enter the United States, and for that reason a border clampdown was necessary.

Speaking on Capital Hill on Dec. 11, Lieberman said, “The security’s better on the U.S.-Mexico border than it has been before in terms of terrorists.” Yet he made sure to stress that security must be enhanced even further in order to take away every remaining weak spot terrorists might exploit to cross into the country. 

He added that because of the size of the U.S.-Mexico border, the U.S. will probably never reach a point “where we’re going to say, ‘Ok, we have enough defenses on our border.'” However, Lieberman does believe we can maintain a level of border security where Americans can at least feel secure.
