Marine Arrives Home from Mexican Prison in Time for Christmas

Jon Hammar, the twenty-seven year old Marine who was imprisoned in the notorious CEDES jail in Mexico for four months, arrived home at his parents’ home in Florida Monday in time for Christmas.

His mother Olivia, when she heard that Mexico was releasing him, said, “It was like my first night that I slept all night long without getting up and it was just the thought of not wondering what was going on with him, can anyone hurt him tonight, those kind of thoughts.”

Hammar, a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, was jailed last August when he traveled through Mexico on his way to Costa Rica. The Mexican government claimed a gun he carried violated their laws. He received death threats during the four months he was held there.

But his case was not so simple; the vintage Sears Roebuck shotgun he wielded was not outside Mexican law and may have only violated the law in not having the proper permits, for which he was not accused.
