Discussions are under way in London’s Permanent Joint Headquarters concerning military steps to keep the Falkland Islands as an overseas territory of the United Kingdom.
One of the options being discussed is the “deployment of Royal Navy’s Response Task Force Group.” This is “a flotilla [comprised of] destroyers, a frigate, a submarine, and commandos.”
The planners are basing their decisions on the pending outcome of a March 11 referendum, wherein Falkland voters will vote “yes” or “no” on remaining such a territory. The British government expects the vote to be a resounding “yes.”
British intelligence is warning that once the vote takes place, Argentina could try a “stunt” such as “planting of [their] country’s flag on the island by a small raiding party.”
If this happens, a quick escalation in events could take place–an escalation involving the tools of war.
