Coptic Christians Fleeing Egypt as Islamic Extremism Rises

Reports indicate that tens of thousands of Coptic Christians are fleeing Egypt in the wake of Mohammed Morsi’s rise to power and the subsequent flourishing of Islamism.

Many of these Coptic Christians are fleeing to the U.S., and others are fleeing to Canada and Australia.

The new Islamist constitution in Egypt was a breaking point for many. As a leader in Cairo’s Church of St. Mary and St. John the Baptist put it: “With the new constitution, the new laws that are expected, and the majority in parliament I don’t believe we can be treated on an equal basis.”

Sadly, for many Christians in Egypt’s population, relocating to another country is not an option. Thus, the majority of the 6 to 8 million Christians will remain there and try not to raise the ire of the Islamists.
