Christians United for Israel Summit Fight Hagel Nomination

Christians United for Israel (CUFI), the largest pro-Israel organization in the United States with 1.2 million members, is convening an emergency summit meeting Monday in Washington D.C.; over 400 Christian leaders will urge their senators to vote against Barack Obama’s nomination of Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense.

The summit will feature Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX), CUFI founder and chairman Pastor John Hagee, CUFI board member and President of American Values Gary Bauer, and CUFI executive director David Brog, offering a policy briefing. On Tuesday, the CUFI leaders will follow up with all 100 senators to make known their opposition to Hagel.

The summit resulted from an action alert launched by CUFI after Obama announced he would nominate Hagel. More than 21,000 members emailed their senators asking them to vote against Hagel.

David Brog, CUFI executive director, stated CUFI’s position and made it clear that not only was Hagel’s record indicative of his lack of support for Israel, but more importantly, his terrible record vis-à-vis Iran:

We’re concerned not only that Hagel is a poor choice when it comes to Israel–frankly, we believe he’s a poor choice when it comes to America and American security. The number one security threat to America today is an ascendant and potentially nuclear Iran. And Hagel has demonstrated a consistent pattern of opposing economic sanctions on Iran, opposing diplomatic pressure on Iran, opposing the further isolation of Hezbollah, opposing recognizing Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as the terrorists they are.
