On April 3 White House press secretary Jay Carney said news that the North Korean army had final approval for nuclear launches against the U.S. was part of “a familiar pattern.” Meanwhile, however, the Pentagon moved up the timetable for sending a missile defense system to Guam to protect U.S. interests from possible North Korean rocket launches.
A spokesman for the General Staff of the [North] Korean People’s Army said, “The merciless operation of (our) revolutionary armed forces in this regard has been finally examined and ratified.” He said the U.S. “had better ponder over the prevailing grave situation.”
The White House warned that such “provocations would only further damage relations with the rest of the international community.”
Meanwhile, even before speeding up the time table for sending a missile defense system to Guam, U.S. naval ships were repositioned “in waters off the Korean peninsula.”
