Report: Canadian Police, Intelligence Thwart Terror Plot, Arrest Suspects

Reports indicate Canadian police and intelligence agencies have thwarted a terror plot and made arrests in Montreal and Toronto.

Details are scant, but it appears those arrested had been under surveillance for more than a year. The investigation was reportedly conducted in conjunction with the FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Canadian law enforcement officials have stressed the two men arrested today have no known ties to the Boston Marathon bombing.

Sources close to the arrests claim the disrupted plot could have been “potentially more dangerous than the bombings and hostage-takings planned by the so-called Toronto 18.”

The Toronto 18 plot was uncovered and foiled during the summer of 2006. It included plans to blow up “the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill and the Toronto stock exchange,” as well as plans to behead the “Prime Minister and other politicians.”

CTV News is reporting the arrested suspects planned to derail a commuter train between Toronto and New York. The suspects are also reportedly connected to al Qaeda, though at this time no details to their involvement with the terrorist organization have been released.
