Syria: Israeli Strike a 'Declaration of War'

On May 5, Syria claimed Israel’s reported military strike on a Damascus research facility is a “declaration of war,” and that retaliation will be necessary.

Moreover, Iranian Revolutionary Guard General Masoud Jazayeri says that Iran will retaliate through Syria. The Iranian regime is closely allied with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.

And while Israeli officials continue withhold comment on the alleged strike, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al Mekdad has no doubt Israel carried out the strike, accusing Israel of siding with “the terrorists” who are trying to overthrow Assad.

U.S. President Barack Obama said he supports Israel’s right to strike. But he also said it will be up to Israel to let the world know whether they did or didn’t carry out the strike.

Neither Syria nor Iran has made clear what form their retaliation might take.
