Hagel Orders Sweeps of Military for Material 'Degrading' to Women

On May 7, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel ordered searches of troop workplaces–including military offices–to root out materials deemed “degrading” toward women.

These include “photos, calendars, magazines, screen-savers, and computer files,” among other things.

The scouring of military offices has to take place by July 1, and reports detailing the findings must be submitted. During similar searches in Air Force ranks last year, airmen said “fitness magazines” and “beer posters” were targeted.

Of the 1,714 troops “specifically targeted with an allegation of sexual assault in 2012, about 302 ultimately faced a court martial” and only 238 of those were convicted. In many of the cases, no court martial took place because the sexual assault charges were dropped.
