Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Muqdad is due in Moscow Wednesday to hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on a planned peace conference on ending the conflict in Syria, the RIA Novosti state news agency said.
The news agency said that Muqdad and Lavrov would be discussing preparations for the peace conference which was agreed by the Russian top diplomat and visiting US Secretary of State John Kerry earlier this month.
There were no immediate further details.
Russia is seen as the most important remaining ally of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the West wants Moscow to use its leverage to help end the over two year conflict between the government and rebels.
