Report: Cameron to Launch Task Force to Stop Islamic Radicalization

British Prime Minister David Cameron has reportedly decided on a new task force to stamp out Islamic extremism across the country. According to the UK Daily Mail:

The Prime Minister wants to stop extremist clerics using schools, colleges, prisons and mosques to spread their ‘poison’ and is to head a new Tackling Extremism and Radicalisation Task Force (TERFOR) made up of senior Ministers, MI5, police and moderate religious leaders.

The high-powered group will study a number of measures, including banning extremist clerics from being given public platforms to incite students, prisoners and other followers – and forcing mosque leaders to answer for ‘hate preachers’.

According to a senior source at Whitehall, Cameron “is determined to challenge the poisonous narrative of extremist clerics and confront religious leaders who promote violence.”

Britain’s Islamic population is one of the most radicalized in the Western world. A 2006 poll showed that 40 percent of British Muslims wanted sharia law implemented in parts of the country, and that 20 percent sympathized with the “feelings and motives” of the terrorists who attacked London on July 7, 2005, murdering 52 people. A full half of Muslims said they thought relations between British Muslims and the rest of the country were deteriorating.

A January 2009 cable from the US government revealed by Wikileaks discussed a survey of 600 Muslims at 30 universities in Britain, which found that 32 percent thought killing for Islam was justified, and that 54 percent wanted a Muslim party in Parliament. The same study found that Muslims claimed the highest disability rates of any subgroup in Britain, with more than one in five men and women claiming disability.

A new poll of British citizens shows that almost two-thirds think there will be a “clash of civilizations” between British Muslims and other members of the British population. About one-third of British citizens feel that British Muslims “pose a serious threat to democracy.”

One of every ten British residents under 25 is Muslim. According to the Office for National Statistics, Christianity in the UK is dropping like a stone, while Islamic religiosity is rising quickly. The British Muslim population is up 75 percent in England and Wales over the last 15 years, and now represents 5 percent of the population of the United Kingdom.
