Minister: Rowhani Wins Iran Presidential Election

(AFP) – Moderate cleric Hassan Rowhani has won Iran’s presidential election, the interior minister announced on Saturday, putting an end to eight years of conservative grip on the nation’s executive.

Mohammad Mostafa Najjar said that, with 18.6 million votes, or 50.68 percent, Rowhani had won outright.

He said 36.7 million people, or 72.7 percent of the electorate, had voted in Friday’s election.

More than 50.5 million Iranians were eligible to vote for a successor to Mahmud Ahmadinejad, who was constitutionally barred from standing again after serving two consecutive terms.
