The Israelis and Palestinians have agreed to restart direct peace talks for the first time in “more than three years.”
The Wall Street Journal reports that “top Israeli and Palestinian officials will meet in Washington within a week to formalize a time frame and other details before a more formal relaunch” of the peace talks begins.
The first round of negotiations will include Israel’s Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Palestine’s chief negotiator Saeb Erekat.
Secretary of State John Kerry has been working with both sides for months, “shuttling between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.”
He broke the news of the renewed peace talks on July 19: “I’m pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement. This is a significant and welcome step forward. We know that the challenges will require difficult choices in the days ahead. Today, I am hopeful.”
